Poem written by Dylan Thomas and first published in a British magazine, Horizon, in 1945 together with another poem of his, Fern Hill,  and a year later, in 1946, in Thomas' collection of poems, "Deaths and entrances".

Poema escrito por Dylan Thomas y publicado por primera vez en una revista británica, Horizon, en 1945, junto con otro poema suyo, Fern Hill. Un año después, en 1946, A refusal...fue publicado en la antología de Dylan Thomas "Deaths and entrances",

It was a response to the death of a child in London as a victim of air raids during wwii.

El poema fue la respuesta que dió el escritor y poeta Dylan Thomas a causa de la muerte de una niña, víctima de los bombardeos durante la segunda guerra mundial.

Never until the mankind making

Nunca hasta la creación del hombre

Bird beast and flower

Pájaro bestia y flor

Fathering and all humbling darkness

Paternidad y oscuridad toda humildad

Tells with silence the last light breaking

Nos cuenta con silencio el último rayo de luz

And the still hour

Y la hora quieta

Is come of the sea tumbling in harness

Que viene del mar revolviéndose en el arnés

And I must enter again the round

Y debo adentrarme de nuevo en el redondo

Zion of the water bead

Sión de la cuenta de agua

And the synagogue of the ear of corn

Y la sinagoga de la cáscara de maíz

Shall I let pray the shadow of a sound

Dejaré que ore la sombra de un sonido

Or sow my salt seed

O sembraré mi semilla de sal

In the least valley of sackcloth to mourn

En el más insignificante valle de arpillera para estar de luto

The majesty and burning of the child’s death

La majestuosidad y quemazón de la muerte de la criatura

 

I shall not murder

No mataré

The mankind of her going with a grave truth

La humanidad de su marcha con una verdad de ultratumba

Nor blaspheme down the stations of the breath

Ni echaré abajo blasfemando los pasos de la respiración

Without any further

Sin mayores

Elegy of innocence and youth

Elegías de inocencia y juventud

Deep with the first dead lies London’s daughter

En lo profundo con los primeros muertos yace la hija de Londres

Robed in the long friends

Amortajada en las largas amistades

The grains beyond age, the dark veins of her mother

Las semillas más allá de la edad, las venas oscuras de su madre

Secret by the unmourning water

Secretas junto al agua impenitente

Of the riding Thames

Del Támesis serpenteante

After the first death, there is no other

Después de la primera muerte no hay otra
